Vigil Games Unsold; Is Platinum Buying Darksiders?

Vigil Games was among the couple of galleries left with no buyer following the THQ auction, throwing the way forward for the Darksiders franchise up in mid-air.

Vigil Games was among the couple of galleries left with no buyer following the THQ auction, throwing the way forward for the Darksiders franchise up in mid-air.

Lead Combat Designer at Vigil Games Ben Cureton published instructions around the NeoGAF forums indicating his dismay in the situation. Meanwhile the mind of Platinum Games might be considering purchasing the Darksiders franchise.

Ben Cureton Saying Goodbye

Cureton’s publish on NeoGAF gives view of the problem at THQ (by extension Vigil Games).

My name is Ben Cureton, and I was the Lead Combat Designer at Vigil Games. I’m sitting at my desk among… what appears to be a warzone. The walls look bare. It’s quiet.

The seats are empty.

He continues, speaking on how he will miss the Vigil team and how it felt being looked over in the auction.

Not that it was perfect. But what is perfect? Did I like coming to work? Yes. Was I proud of the work that I did? Yes. More importantly, was I proud of the work that WE did? Absolutely. […]
… so maybe you can imagine what it feels like when you read the list of who bought what only to discover your name is not on the list. Why? Did we do something wrong? Were we not good enough? Were we not worth ‘anything?’ Imagine that.

Vigil was filled with people that I would put up against the best in the industry. People that made my work better, people that made me a better designer, and people that made me a better person. And now they are gone.

Their seats are empty.

It’s sad to determine they at Vigil Games have to part ways. The Darksiders games were both popular, though Darksiders 2 didn’t get together to THQ’s sales anticipations. It naturally hit difficult to hear he and also the relaxation of his team wouldn’t be taken underneath the wing of some other company.

The relaxation from the letter is extended, but is well-worth a read even when you personally didn’t look after the games Ben Cureton labored on. The conditions behind THQ’s purchase and subsequent studio deficits are in no way a typic in the market. It’s sad to determine these folks lose their jobs, so we at GameSkinny wish them the very best within their future endeavors.

What Happens to Darksiders?

The Darksiders IP is comparatively fresh, thinking about there’ve only been two games within the series. Without any one positively seeking Vigil, the IP is with no home — that is something a particular development studio over the Off-shore might be searching to ease.

Mind of Platinum Games Atsushi Inaba published on his Twitter, indicating a vague want for that Darksiders franchise. The tweet reads (converted on my own):

“Darksiders is seriously remaining in the THQ studio and IP purchase? We want to purchase it… inexpensively…”

The possibilities of the franchise living on is fairly nice, but it is difficult to to not correlate Platinum Games with more than-the-top action games. Would something a little reduced and fewer “curazaaaay” be lower their alley? You never know. We may never determine if Inaba does not choose to snap it up up.
